What was the code? Do you know the number? Don't buy anything yet to fix it...

Go back if you can and have them pull the code. Do you have a check engine light on?
If you have a check engine light on, pull your battery for about 30 min and drive like normal and see if it comes on.
Here is a chart of all the DTC's...get the code and see what it matches up to.

It could be just a sensor that came out or something. Same thing happend on my Contour last night. I just plugged in my Xcal2 and reset the DTC's on it.
Same thing on the Focus last year. A sensor went bad. I think it was a DPFE? Sensor. Ford replaced it for free.

would that show up for him in the diagnostic mode on the odometer?
if so he should look up the procedures and do it for himself
