I agree as well, I wouldn't do computer work ie home networking, building a computer, or any of that for free as well. Hell I charge my parents when I have to fix their computer, do I charge them the going rates? No, but I certainly don't or wouldn't do it for free.

So there is give and take in certain situations.

As far as focinite goes, he can do a full diagnostics, for a fairly reasonable rate might I add, Autozone and the like will only do error code scans and resets, nothing more beyond that.

so thats my $0.02

I don't charge family for service (goods is another story). They have always been there to bail me out of things, so I figure I can do the same. Of course I havn't done anything related to my trade, so that could be different.

Part of the reason I charge is so that I don't get calls all hours of every day asking for support. I learned from other peoples mistakes is that once you help someone (specially for computer or anything technology related) is that they'll expect you to do it for them from that moment on.

I don't want to be that guy at the holiday parties "oh so your know computers eh?"

I charge for a reason, makes life less stressful, but if they are willing to pay, I'll help out.

Each situation is different, also I've got $40k in student loans to pay for and its all on me, no help from the parentals.

I'm not exactly punctual, for fixing their stuff, so I don't think they ask too much.
