Sorry i dont buy the not enough money thing. Rat rod is art deco moving sculpture. A hot rod is a striped down machine with one main goal, to go fast and a secondary goal, look good doing so. In my eye a hot rod dont have ta be shinny. It should embody the enginuity and cheapness of a broke ass mad man. A rat rod is some artsy fartsy statement about how some ass hole took a pile of scrap and some s-10 parts and made a car for some fake red haired dame to take pictures with in a stewpit magazine. This countries history is deep set with hotrods and the people that moved inovation along. Rat roders smell bad and are unemployed.

There are Rat Rods and there are art cars, I think the ones annoying Focinite would fall under the art car category.
I saw some Rat Rods at '50s that were better engineered and probably more driveable than a lot of the pretty cars.
That said, not a Rat, just really, really cool.

Went to a car show last fall with a friend and we coined a new term.
Trash Rod
The "car" we were looking at had crap bolted all over it including toilet seat covers for mud flaps. The rear tires were off some old dually, were dry rotted, and there was no way this thing was safe to drive.

I still cant see some pic on mt tablet... but any way on sunday over by the cop shop and cable cars i saw a nice 5 window with a red and white striped roof, it was a very low boy had the tall white pie crusts wraped around some red steelies. Most would lump it in with rat rods... wrong its a period correct hot rod. But steve you are right i hate art cars. And i dont like image cars... be in it 100% show it some honor and know what your doin.. i love hot rods i grew up around all the street rods and fiber glass blow jobs and there fine and what not but my hart is with the making parts and using what you have to go 180mph in a 70 year old car. Sorry i just am very passionate about hot rods..

Did you see the guy with the rusty '32 Tudor with the blown 392 in it? He drove that thing around ALL day Saturday functional blower and all. Never seemed to overheat or anything.
Lots and lots of cool stuff out there this weekend.
