The FocusEV conversion took around 8 months to get to the first drive under electric power. This is 100% electric - no hybrid. Cost was about $11,000 for the parts. You could spend a bit less or a lot more depending on what range you want and how fast you want to go. For that price it'll go 35 miles on 6 or 7 hours of charging and it'll go 70 MPH (although it takes a while to get up there.)
The project is documented at http://www.simonfamily.us/FocusEV
with a set of summary slides at

it's spendy to do. i been looking into EV for awhile. but i need more range (a lot more). do you use your forst 3 gears or just stay in second? here's another step by step of an escort EV http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3155482
we would all prolly like to see that EV. keep poking around on here and we'll prolly end up having a meet up there.
i'm looking into getting the new Tesla S. would like to get it when it comes out, but late 2011 might be more realistic.

Reason I needed a new car:
2006 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6, 79,XXX miles dont know the exact as the battery was dead on picture day.

I got t-boned on 221st (Co Rd 74) and MN HWY 65
New car. 2008 Ford Focus SE, Power windows, locks, mirrors, moonroof, SYNC, cruise control. 28,090 when I drove off the lot. $11,399 +ttl. Cheaper than the Hyundai was when I got her 2 yrs ago with 34k ($12,488 +ttl) less power, but get an average of 5-7 mpg better.

This car needs some help though, some light modifications to "personalize" it. Dont have a ton of cash flow though any ideas?

Let's see here:
Tint - will cost about 200 or so. PM me and I can give you the number to the place I have had 4 of my vehicles done. Lifetime warranty and he's mobile.
Drop - Springs and shocks/struts. Will cost about 800, but worth it.
Debadge - This is free and takes minutes.
De-vent - Again, free and takes no time. I'm talking about those stupid little vents on the side fender. I think they are ugly.
Paint some stuff - The front grill. Either black or body color. With proper prep it should look just fine. Sand it down, paint and clear. Cost about $15 and take 3 hours. If you're feeling good about yourself, look up a headlight baking how-to, split them open and do the same to the headlight housing. This will take some time and your car will be off the road with out them, but they will look SICK.
Here's one with the headlights and grill painted.

that is one sick lookin pup. Tint I like the idea, I'll have to think about it. I dont really wanna do suspension work. Not really into painting the stuff either. Some of things I was thinkin was like:
exhaust tip (rolled chrome)
maybe a spoiler
wheels
interior lighting to match the dash
foglights
I dont want anything to spectacular, I want my car to maintain a low profile up here. If my car sticks out too much, attention will follow. Small town suck that way.
Oh yeah, its an auto, not too sporty. and thank you.
