So I've been thinking about law enforcement for quite some time now and it's now that time to do something about it. I know a few of you guys on here are in the field and I was wondering where the best school is, best place to start, etc.... Thanks for your help!

I was an MP in the US Army. I got a medical discharge but I know alot of people who start out as an MP then go into the field from there. Also security work while they go to school, and I know a hand full of people that are in the Police Reserve Programs ( I know Maple Grove/ Fridley/Osseo all have Reserve programs). Anything job wise like security, corrections, loss prevention, military ( any job) or Military as an MP is a pretty good foot in the door. I personal was an MP for 2 years and am now in Security and starting next week will have a second job in corrections. Just a few options for you to think about. Also, think about specializing- K-9, CSI, transportation, Corrections, SWAT, things like that. Good Luck. Any more questions let me know.

To work in MN you need at least an associates degree (2 yr.). Which can be obtained from a variety of places in anything like, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, etc. etc.
After that you need to go through the skills program (at either CCJLE (Twin Cities option), Mankato, St. Cloud, or Alexandria all have these programs. This is another year of school, or slightly less.... (It is one full semester of normal class room work, and then the second semester is all the hands on stuff, you can also option out for the 8 wk. program, which highly condenses things (and makes it a 9 hr day or class, everyday).
I went to the University of Wisconsin - River Falls, and got my Bachelors. I went for a Major in Sociology and my Minor in Criminal Justice, then I went to CCJLE for skills.
The best part is that you get to pull over teenage boys and frisk them for no reason. Mmmmmmmmmmm
Let me know what else you need to know.

I was thinking about going to Inver Hills because it is the closest to home. But the negative to that is that it's close to home. My grades in high school were not great but on the ACT I scored a 33 out of 36. So university wise, it's a toss up as to if I would get accepted or not. Plus money wise, It's not really there. Going through some tough times right now. Is there a school that you would recommend? Thanks doodes for all your help.

Inver has a good program. They also tie there curriculum in with CCJLE (so all those credits you get there, count towards your degree at Inver - which is sweet, for me they were all just extra credits that counted for nothing more than more money out of my pocket).frankjt96 wrote:I was thinking about going to Inver Hills because it is the closest to home. Plus inver is as affordable as you are going to get. School loans FTW. Especially if you or your family is having money problems, they will then give you even more money

Do they let you put your bullet in your gun yet or do you still have to keep it in your shirt pocket?

there should be many of scholarship programs out there for everybody. if you can't find one, go to the United Negro College Fund, the one for Native Americans, or one for Asian's. if they deny you, claim racism and file a law suit, they'll come around quick.
i have (had) a friend that just got accepted. he went to school "late" and it took over a year and like 4 rejection to get accepted the state patrol (MN). so, i guess I'm saying, if you're going to do it , do it.
i also have a friend that "wants" to be a cop but doesn't take initiative
