Just an item of interest, something we do at work...
What the heck is it? For those familiar with the new mood lighting that ford has in the focus and other models it is a test station we design and build to test the wiring harness used for the interior LED lighting. This system not only checks to make sure the metal clips are in place it also is programmed to cycle the leds through their full range of colors checking each led in the harness for proper color and intensity. If a harness passes a label is printed with all the manufacturing and part information on it that the operator places on the harness before they get packed and sent to an assembly plant.

What you see on the top side is the wiring harness plugged into the fixture which is what the operator would be doing. I does kind of remind ya of a breadboard project from electrical class though doesn't it! What you don't see are all the sensors and mass of wiring behind the board. Also the whole cabinet below is stuffed with electronic power and test equipment to analyze the inputs from all the sensors. On this style of turnkey project we also did all the programming. This particular top for the harnesses is interchangeable for different models, so far we have built three different tops for Ford products as well as two stations. Each top with programming for one harness type is 40k and the base is around 90k. It sounds as though we may be getting into some GM harnesses as well. This project was not mine but I have designed fixturing for clusters, ECU and GEM testing of Ford products.
