The key will start the car, but it will not go all the way back to take the key out. This ignition switch has 4 positions? We gots 3.
I've read that there is a solenoid under the shifter that allows the key to be taken out when its in park. (It's an auto). Is this a good place to start looking?
I had a locksmith look at the switch. He said he's replaced many of these Focus ignitions! But, he said the switch is not this cars problem.
Key Is Stuck On The '01
yeah the ignition cyl like to do that in the focus, I can fax you the way to remove the cylinder when i get in to work on wednesday or you can go to the library and look at alldata to see how its done ( most library's have alldata ) and once u get it out I can build you a new cylinder for about $ 65.00.
you can pick it up or i can ship it to you
thats the best i can do for you today

That only will work if the shift interlock solenoid (If I remember right ) is preventing the key cylinder from "seeing" it is in parkpantera1 wrote: I've read that there is a solenoid under the shifter that allows the key to be taken out when its in park. your problem is from a bad design on the key cylinder which gums up from the metal shavings from the key itself... atleast thats what i see when i rebuild these at work
I could be wrong and have misdiag your symptoms but it sounds like the cylinder need to be replaced

Yeah, my locksmith buddy can do the cylinder "almost free today". LOL. We will get that replaced and keyed up.
But....
he says this looks like the shift interlock solenoid. Is there a way to test for this, or is it go in, replace it, and see if it works?

if you get parts( new lock cyl kit) i can have it fixed in under an hour. the release is ...look at the coloum, sorry, remove plastic covers, take a angled pick, put key in koeo( key on, engine off) poke the pick in the hole ontop of the key cyl housing, while poking whiggle key and pull slightly at the same time, once out find the little metal u clip on the back or the metal cover on the side( euro style) pull pins 1 at a time and match numbers on pins to new pins and install as directions state. or bring to me ill do it , i love doing these. worst case beak key off and slide hammer cyl out.
