After slaving over the engine stand all evening I pulled all my timing components and got the cylinder heads off. It's pretty brutal. Turns out I had two bad pistons and my dad and I's theory is that the wrist pin failed causing that piston to lock up and those rods are pretty tough so something had to give.

Whats next? Forged pistons/rods? Do they make stroker kits for those 3 liters?

Nah they don't... I plan on picking up a new short block from Steve. The stock internals are good for 350whp and thats more than you'd ever need with the fwd platform :) I can't justify the extra 2000 bucks for forged pistons and rods when I still wouldn't get the power to the ground. If I buy the Turbo kit I can run about 10psi safely on stock internals when I get it back up and running which would put me up close to the 350whp mark.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a machine shop I could have my heads tested at? I think a valve or two may need replacing and I'd do it myself but I want to make sure they are going to be seating properly and I don't have a good way to test that here at home.

I still say rod bearing, When the rod bearing fails and seizes it'll tear up the rod and piston quite badly.

When I blew up my 430 Buick it was a rod bearing and it only ran about 30 seconds or less after the big bang but when I pulled it apart the entire piston was gone from about the midpoint of the hole for the wrist pin, in fact I used the remains of the piston as an ashtray for years until it vanished.

Not that it realy matters though, blown up is blown up.

that looks tastey!!! that was under throttle? its possible that you had crank walk on ya. it saw to many flexes in to many differnt ways and it sqwirms speacialy in a luminum block. but it was prolly the rod baring or pins. looks good though, figure if yer gonna blow sumtin up might as well do good!! 8)

Exactly.... It was "under throttle" getting on the on-ramp maybe 4-5k rpms. Nothing too extreme I used to run er up a lot higher then that 8) The 2.5 I had the hard rev limiter set at 7400 and same on the 3.0. I don't know that I ever actually hit it though I usually shifted at 7200 when I was really laying into it. The stock rev limiter was 7k so it's not like i was really going overboard.
