Getting on the freeway yesterday and I hit about 6K rpms and the car acted as if I had just hit the rev-limiter. It hesitated and felt like I lost power. I down shifted and tried it again and confirmed that I was not hitting the limiter.

I was going to start with plugs. There are about 70K miles on the car right now. Anything else that I should check?

Timing belt been done?

I would highly recommend not revving it and possibly not even starting the engine until you figure this out. If it's the timing belt you could lunch your engine.

Hah! You're running into the exact problem I was having. Check for codes, mine had a fuel rail pressure sensor circuit malfunction that was throwing a code but no CEL.

If you're lucky, and that's the issue, the sensor might even fix it for you....I was not so lucky, 2 sensors and a coil later and it was still doing the same thing, got pissed and traded it in.

mine did the same thing. liek the traction control turned on and you had to down shift to make it work again. im pretty sure mine ended up being my tp sensor. threw off all my fuel curvs and such.

got schooled with my AEM c.a.i and got some moisture up there and messed with the tps causing it to act very very wierd.

I replaced the plugs and the problem went away.

Now, the car is doing the same thing again, but it threw a code today. P0190 - Fuel Pressure Sensor

I would do a timeing belt. Even if that does fix it its always better to be safe than having valves drop into the pistons.

Were you going around the cloverleaf? Was your gas tank low? Maybe fuel pump, fuel filter, that's what my zetec did.

$85.00 for a new fuel rail pressure sensor, could also be a bad pump I suppose but I see more sensors fail than pumps.

If you have the ability to check PID's this would be a great way to see what is causing the problem and not guess at it.

Well, the problem is fixed. 10,000 miles later, my fuel pump finally completely failed on me. I replaced it last night and the problem is completely gone.

My fuel pump was slowly dying for a long damn time!
