voltage regulator or maybe battery?

I'm having a problem with my focus. its acting like a dead alternator. (dimming lights, stereo shuting down) but i just put a new alternator in and it has a year old optima red top. now here is the kicker the voltage light isn't on the car feels like lose of power I'm guessing from low voltage for the plugs. and the air bag light turned on. anyone had any problems like this? thanks
