WTF! I just have bad luck.

So I nite shaded my tail lights about a week and a half ago. Well tonight I got pulled over for it. Lucky for me the guy was really nice about it and just wrote me a warning that covers me for a week or so to get new ones.

1. I thought the MN law was that if they are viable from 1000 ft during the day and at night it's legal.

2. I just have rotten luck. I know lots of you guys here in MN and lots of other people around the country have done this and gone years without getting pulled over.

So now I have to look for some stock ones to replace these.

FML.

So if anybody is selling some stock hatch taillights let me know.

How dark are they?

I personally didn't think they were nearly as dark as some. I taped over the reverse lights for a little more of an OEM look. You can still see some red through them during the day (not with the lights on, just the light itself) and IMO you can still see the light output from them just fine.

The cop said "I only noticed because compared to the car next to yours they weren't quite as bright."
and
"If the car next to you hadn't had such bright taillights I probably wouldn't have even noticed"

Right because eveyone tail lights are equal in stock form right? :?

I wonder how much brighter those multi LED tail light bulbs are, anyone know if there's any possible issue with overheating wiring with those?

shouldn't really be as LED's draw much less power than an incandescent bulb

Those aren't too bad, better than the older ones they made. I've just never been a fan of that full LED look.

after reading that again, it sounds like they are talking about altering the third brake light... i dunno, kinda vague. at first I read it as any stop lamp

You actually have to dig through a few laws to make the tint thing work. It's not that it dims the light to an illegal point, it's that it hampers the reflective portion more than is allowed.
Subd. 10.Cover for lamp or reflector.

(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b), it is prohibited for any person to:

(1) equip a motor vehicle with any equipment or material that covers a headlamp, taillamp, or reflector; or

(2) operate a motor vehicle fitted with or otherwise having equipment or material that covers a headlamp, taillamp, or reflector.

(b) Paragraph (a) does not apply to:

(1) any manufacturer's original equipment or material;

(2) any equipment or material that is clear and colorless; or

(3) the covering for auxiliary lights required under section 169.56.

these lights are illegal too by themselves. they dont have a red reflector. if reflectivity is the issue, then get some reflective red tape. if its light output just wet sand them down. thats win win, moar bright, moar shiney.

but, i also have full led tails (not like those), chrome, for sale too

what color are your housings?

Woo! I don't have to buy new ones.

My dad works in the materials lab for the state and we brought in there and used a compound that's used to pull oil out of blacktop and it got all of the niteshade off. Now I just need to sand them down and clear coat them and they will look stock as good as new.
