Please tell me a reason why one would want to run a AWD setup on a Focus?

Then buy a Mustang... :?

I don't see the point of doing a whole drivetrain/motor swap. I could see the motor swap...but why butcher a car that has made its fame for its handling, and take that away...I dunno...I guess this is where ones opinions can differ for ideas...

personally I favor a sierra cosworth/escort cosworth setup, that way you can keep it in the family and have a nice setup. although I guess thos emight be harder to come by than a subaru setup

Even the Sierra/Cosworth guys (Merkur) have been going to T-bird/Mark 8/Cobra IRS stuff since the Merkur stuff is virtually impossible to find.

The only reason I could see for the drivetrain swap thing is for the sleeper factor.

Personally for the cost involved I'd be happier with a Torsen and a turbo in my SVT.

That's not why we do it. The reason for the swap is that the Euro 7.5" diff Only has a few gear options (3.36, 3.64 and 3.92) and is fairly weak. The 8.8 stuff is a lot stronger and a lot cheaper. You can install an 8.8 with a torsen in an XR (which requires some custom stub shafts or CV shafts and a modified crossmember) for less than what a Quaiffe ATB would cost and you have your choice of about a million different gear ratios.

As for why one would want an AWD Focus: why wouldn't you want an AWD Focus? My friend who did the AWD conversion on his XR is considering an AWD Fox-body Mustang, too. He was also trying to convince me to do an AWD setup in my Focus with the drivetrain from a Jag X Type.

Yeah, but we are talking AWD setup here, not just IRS.

Which this reminds me, what the heck happened to my Performance Ford magazine subscription?

I would think the drivetrain out of an Escape would work for a Focus with some modification and you could get it in 2.0 Zetec or 2.3 Duratec versions.

Can't be that hard to do.

^^^I was just thinking this past week you could just bolt a Focussport turbo kit right into one...But then you might as well get the V6..

Ah, but the V6 only comes with an automatic and I'm not sure the MTX would handle the V6 and AWD even if it would bolt up.

I actually hadn't thought of the Escape. I figured the 4-cyl awd versions would be fairly scarce. I suppose we'll need to take some measurements...

They probably are scarce but they do exist, it's just a matter of looking.
