when life gives you....

This is kinda weird to ask here. But basically heres the deal. I'm going to turn 18 in about a half a year or so. I have to plans on what to do after HS. I could continue school and go to college at NDSU where my parents will help me along the way. Or I would move to be almost what you could say the 'heir' to the throne of my grandpas laundry business. Basically he does laundry for some big resorts, has a pretty big plant where they run these huge machines and shit...I'm so confused at what I should do. I could make TONS of money there if I wanted to. There are things I'm afraid of though of going there. First of I wouldn't know anyone in the city...I would have to find new friends I guess...maybe that sounds real teenager'ish but I can't imagine life without a few buddies to like go to baseball games with and shit. I know I could meet some new people from the dezert focus crew thats on focaljet. Also I'm afraid that I might burn out in the laundry business. My gramps said that after not to long of me taking over I would be in a completely administrative position, meaning like I wouldn't have to help with deliveries and junk and I would have enough people hired by then to do random stuff like that.
Second choice. Stay here and attend college at NDSU in fargo. Study computer science to be some kind of person that works in the computer fields. Have a probably more stable life and make good money, with oppurtunties of advancement frequently.
Yes this all might have been like WTF on mnfocus.com...but i'm coming to you guys for some insight on shit like this. After being here reading forums off and on for a year i've come to respect a lot of you guys and it seems like i could get some good opinions and stories from you guys.

Can you:
A. Get your degree and have the option to join your grandfather?
or
B. Join your grandfather with the option to opt out and get your degree?
If grandpa can wait, get your degree. Then decide if the laundry business is for you (maybe work there during the summers, get a feel for it).
It's good to have options. What ever direction you take, stick with it, work hard, and don't look back.

I agree with HRW, I would shoot for his option A. Then you could take business classes with your CS path (CS and Business are in the same college at my school) to give you a backup plan. Working there during the summers to get a feel for it is also great advice.

What are you getting your degree in? I guess that is what I would base my decision on.
Definately worth it to go to school especially just for the experience and to grow up a bit.

I would prefer to go with degree over the business. like HRW said..spend ur summer time over there to get a feel for it and you can decide if that is what you wanted for the rest of your life?
If you have the option not to decide till you graduate, I for sure will get my degree then decide later. Your degree stays with you till you die vs the business is unpredictable (ups and downs). In case you lost the business, you can still use your degree to find a decent job.

if it were myself, id stick with a safe bet. laundry must be done!!! computers....who knows, but as long as there are people there will be laundry!!. soon youll see that a friend will be there no matter the distance, and fun time is now comming to an end. if the laundry biz is solid and will make money( the more the better) then why not? from what i hear , the computer indistry is starting to fill up and the need for entry level techs is going away. the same happened to me with welding, i went to school and got out , found out that most(95%) places wanted at least 2 years on job exper. so cant get a job cus i got no exper, cant get exper, cus i cant get a job!! the IT industry is alot like this from the people ive talked to. soo id go with the safe, and profitable, bet.

Come on Rob, A degree is everything. It doesn't even matter if it applies to the field you work in as long as you can wave the little piece of paper showing you went to school.
Thats one of the things that drives me insane, you can be a complete imbecile and as long as you have a degree you can get a great paying job.
Get the degree and then go for the gravy job at the laundry, trust me.
