The Best of Belize

I went to Belize, Central America for 11 days over Spring break with 25 other UWRF students for an Anthropology Study Tour. Basically we got class credits for going on vacation. We spent the first half of the trip in a jungle resort in the Cayo District and the second half was spent on the island of Ambergris Caye in the town of San Pedro. Heres some of my favorite pix from the trip...enjoy!!

Image
This was my cabana I shared with two other girls for the first half of the trip

Image
This is what the jungle looks like in the morning. This was taken from a bird watching tower at Crystal Paradise (the place we stayed)

Image
There were tons of gorgeous flowers and plants there. This was my best shot

Image
Heres my second favorite flower pic

Image
This is the scorpion I came across in our bathroom when I came in one night. The other girls were asleep, but luckily it was gone in the morning.

Image
At the market in San Ignacio on the first Saturday.

Image
The Mayan city of Xunantunich. This was the first of the sites we visited.

Image
This is at the Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala. It was a full day of hiking through the jungle and climbing temples. One of my favorite days of the trip.

Image
A view from the top of one of the temples at Tikal...gorgeous, and I dont think pictures could ever do it justice

Image
Some of us girls on a temple at Tikal

Image
This is a salt water lake in Guatemala that we stopped at on our way back from Tikal

Image
Big Rock Falls back in the Maya Mountains of Belize. We had a blast jumping off of some of the rocks and swimming around the falls

Image
Me and my friend Sarah in front of the falls

Image
Me and Sarah again...at Rio Frio Cave

Image
This place is called Rio on Pools and is a huge area of waterfalls in the Maya Mountains

Image
me and Sarah holding a tarantula our guide found on a night hike at Yal Bak- an overnight trip in the jungle a small group of us went on

Image
This was at Cristo Rey school in Santa Elena, which was the little town ten minutes from where we were staying in the jungle. Every year RF students that go to Belize bring gifts to these kids. This year we brought books and soccer balls. The kids were so cute and ecstatic to see what we brought them.

Image
Me holding a boa constrictor at the Belize Zoo.

Image
Toucan at the Belize Zoo. It was really curious about everyone taking its picture and came right up to the fence.

Image
We went hiking through the jungle one day on our way to some caves, and as we were going through a river, our guide snatched something out of the water really fast. Turned out to be this guy...very cool!

Image
Inside the caves at Achtun Tunich Muknall. This was my favorite part of the trip. Exploring the caves that the Maya used for offerings and blood lettings. I wish I could have had my camera through the whole thing- this was taken at the dry end of the cave and our cameras were in the guides water proof bag the way there. The whole way up to the dry part we were going through the cave's stream, small waterfalls, climbing up down and around rocks, and squeezing through narrow passes.

Image
my group climbed up a small ledge for a group picture

Image
At the furthest point in the cave there was this skeleton- the main attraction of the cave. This was one of the Mayan sacrifices. The Maya believed that caves were passages into the underworld.

Image
This is a view from the little plane we took to the island

Image
Our first night in San Pedro we went on a sunset sail and enjoyed the famous rum punch

Image
A day of sailing and snorkeling. We saw sharks, stingrays, baracudas, jellyfish, sea urchins, tons of coral, and a blowfish

Image
Fishing on the sailboat...no, I didnt catch anything =(

Image
Us girls playin around in the ocean at a small island- smaller than a city block- where we had a beach bbq after snorkeling

Image
me and my friend Jill and a dead stingray on that same island

Image
This was one of my favorite pictures that was taken at a really expensive resort that our group stopped at on a sailing day. We had a bbq down the beach, but got to walk around this place for a while.

Image
Me and Sarah on the beach

Image
Just me...on a post...

Image
Jill, Sarah, and me in a big ass chair at the Rojo Lounge- the super fancy resort

Image
Me and Jill about to go parasailing...sooooo much fun!!!

Image
300 feet up. You wouldnt believe the view!

Image
Jill, Sarah, and me rented a golf cart in San Pedro and got lost. We ended up on the south side of the island, aka the ghetto, but the sunset was amazing

Image
my good friends from the trip, ready for a night on the town. yes kyle, this was the night things got a little wild

In the spirit of Belize I will ask the question my shot glass from there keeps asking me..

I had a crazy aunt/uncle that spent three years down there with my cousins many years ago as missionaries. They came back crazy!
