Ok, like I get the powder coat is tougher. But is wheel painting done by a paint shop tough enough?

Yes. If it is prepped correctly and shot and baked by a paint shop it is just as good as powdercoating. Not many do it this way as it is expensive. My friend did it with a set of his HRE's as he wanted to keep his lip polished. It holds up perfect.

Yeah, I'll be doing the same thing Zero descibed. I'll be getting my rims painted due to the polished lip.

My new 18's only come in Focus bolt pattern in silver. So I need to paint them black.

well, FWIW, I bought Steves old SVT wheels, sanded them lightly, and shot them with flat black duplicolor wheel paint about a year ago, and they don't have a single chip in the paint anywhere
