The iac is a fairly simple and straight forward part to replace(if thats the problem), I don't remember where they stick it on the stock manifold, I have an svt mani, you will need a 1/4" drive socket set with an 8mm socket and extension. Make sure you do not drop the screws, my car is currently holding hostage from me 1 8mm socket, 1 screw, and 1 torx socket.
Pop the hood and prop the throttle open part way I bet it stays running, by the sounds of it, it sounds like your iac is not opening. I don't recall how much they are from steve, I think my svt one was like 58$ Should take you only 15-20 min to replace it. There is an electrical connector that plugs into it with 2 wires, should be right next to the head on the drivers side, its silver.
Sorry I didn't say all this before, but I had gotten home from work and was tired.
Being that its your mom's car I am guessing its totally stock and unmolested so I am going with that notion.
