I've always liked the '84-'86 SVO Mustangs, but I'm puzzled about one thing: How are these engines controlled without a computer-type EMS (Engine Management System)? I know that these can be modified to yield some pretty impressive horsepower.

GM had turbos on the Corvair and a couple Olds and Buick models in the 60s and they even used water-meth systems on them.
Look at the Grand Nationals and T-Types in the mid 80s, those things are killers.

SVO was Fuel Injected.
What you're thinking isn't SVO, it's earlier. Like the 1979 Indy Pace Car with the 2.3T. It was a blow-through carb.
Also, the T-A 6.6T was a blow-through setup.
Most of the old stock carb setups where very sensitive to heat. Being a carb has no was to add or remove based solely on intake heat. Detonation was a mild issue in places with higher ambient temperatures; thinner air was also a problem.
If you can, stick with PCM controlled and fuel injected. The room it opens up for safety is much wider.
Steve,
T-Types were FI.
Corvair, 6.6 Turbo, Starfire/Jetfire are the only non-EMS cars I can thing of from GM.

He never said anything about fuel injection, I think he was just asking about how they ran them on the fairly primitive systems they had back then.
I'm well aware that the T-Type and GN were fuel injected, Weren't the turbo Trans Ams 4.9s though?

Yes, the SVO Mustangs were fuel injected, but what kind of engine management did they have? They certainly weren't computer ECU's.iminhell wrote:SVO was Fuel Injected.

Okay, I'm guessing these were pretty crude. If someone wants to soup up their SVO Mustang, is there a different, more sophisticated, ECU available? Or is it possible to 'tune' the EEC-IV?iminhell wrote:Ford EEC-IV, same as most Fords pre-2000 (after is EEC-V).
I have a computer sitting here from one.

There is/was a company called Forced4 Motorsports that was big into those cars, you can also get in contact with the XR4Ti and T-bird Turbocoupe guys as they were quite similar to the SVOs.

Wow! A Merkur! I had completely forgotten about those cars (XR4Ti & Scorpio). Kinda weird looking. When Mercury decided to discontinue the Merkur, they darn near gave the cars away (especially Scorpios).FORDSVTPARTS wrote:There is/was a company called Forced4 Motorsports that was big into those cars, you can also get in contact with the XR4Ti and T-bird Turbocoupe guys as they were quite similar to the SVOs.
How about the 1970-1974 Mercury Capri? I haven't seen one of those in eons! No turbo, but kinda neat looking. And RWD.

Do you have one you need tuned or something?
I have the tools here to do so if you want.
There are many 'tuning' options for the EEC-IV. TWEECER, Binary Editor/EEC Analyzer are the big 2. Otherwise there are 'chip' options.

I've always been kinda-sorta interested in the SVO Mustangs, but the more I look into it, the less appealing they become. I think the biggest issue would be parts availability. I checked Forced4 Motorsports (Steve's suggestion), but they appear to be out of business.iminhell wrote:Do you have one you need tuned or something?

Check Turboford.org. That's the main forum for the 2.3T guys.
There are still guys making parts on a per order basis. And the cars are still progressing, Folvo for example.
But the big ticket items are very hard to find now, Esslinger ARCA head and such.
It's a niche market.

I almost recently bought a GMC Syclone, is that pre EMS?
Steve,
That one looks to have been a blow-through setup (carb); just like the 6.6T.
Black,
No.
And you're a fool for not buying it.
Don't know if you still can but Jet, that chip company, used to sell chips and a cable and you could tune on the fly. Wasn't much you could do though. Basically change timing and a little fuel. IIRC, was a guy from the MSP area that designed the software, X aircraft mechanic or something I think.
