Hey everyone. I am trying to change out the fuel pump on my 03 focus. Does anyone have the special tool to unscrew the pump from the tank? I tried to jimmy rig all sorts of tools on that cap to twist it off. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I use a 3/8" extension and a rubber mallet.
Tap firmly near the bottom on a rib and move around the ring. Never had any problems getting it off/on.

Actually just pulled my pump last weekend to change my sock filter.

also a note, if it is the factory fuel pump, you will have to cut the fuel pump retainer from the bottom of the fuel tank once the pump is out. otherwise the new pump will not go in. updated pump

I tried the same thing with a 3/8" extender and rubber mallet. I'll give it another try. Wasn't sure if I was going to break something. Thanks for the additional detail on the fuel pump retainer.

Just curious: What is the life expectancy of a Focus fuel pump?

It's an SVT, no worries about the retainer ring. :)

No clue, I've seen them go more than 200,000 miles. Doesn't mean yours will but it happens.

Yeah a serp belt. get a half inch square tube (i d) qbout eight inches long and about twelve inches of a five rib serp belt cut a gap in the end big enough to fit both ends in ram a bolt through them and insert craft man ratchet in other end turn to the left til tight and the giver hell. It should come off. 8)
